The campus community is invited to attend a lecture by Dr. P. M. Forni, co-founder of The Johns Hopkins University Civility Project in 1997, on Thursday, February 23, 2006 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in the University Union, Chesapeake Rooms. A dessert reception will take place from 6:00 – 7:00 p.m. and the lecture will follow from 7:00 – 8:00 p.m. The African American Cultural Center, Housing & Residence Life Department and the Office of Diversity Resources is proud to bring Dr. Forni to campus to lead a provocative, intellectual discussion regarding civility on a college campus. He has led the JHU Civility Project and continues to make people think about how they interact with one another. Dr. Forni will be doing a book signing at the event and his book, “Choosing Civility,” is available for purchase in the University Store.
Dr. Forni’s discussion has nine major points:
1. A definition of civility and the three major arguments for choosing to be civil
2. Incivility and its costs, civility and its rewards
3. The four major causes of incivility
4. How to be at our best with others
5. The physiology of conflictual and harmonious encounters
6. Fostering a culture of civility in the workplace
7. The two ways to be successful in life
8. Strong, smart and nice
9. The future of empathy and relational skills
If you advise student groups or teach a course at Towson University, please encourage your students to attend this worthy program as part of their personal development or for extra credit! For more information regarding the Civility Project, go to {http://www.jhu.edu/civility}.
