Please Help Us Help You by Preventing 911 Hang-Up Calls

The Baltimore County Emergency Dispatch Center and the Towson University Police Department are experiencing an increasing number of 911 hang-up calls originating from telephones on our campus.

Thus we are asking all campus community members to dial carefully from their landlines, especially when making long distance calls. Since we currently have to first dial 9 to make a call to an off campus number, and then add 1 before the 10 digit telephone number for long distance, it is very easy to slip up.

We are working to address that situation but that change won?t take effect until sometime this Fall. So in the meantime, please dial carefully. If you realize you dialed 911 accidentally, do not hang up. Wait for the 911 call-taker to answer the phone and let the person know the call was accidental. Remember, the 911 call center is equipped with software that can determine the call came from our campus. Hanging up does not make everything okay, only more complicated. It creates extra work for the 911 center and the campus police who normally respond to the location of the call?s origin in order to verify that everything is fine.

Thank you for being a part of the solution.
