Downtime Information for This Week’s CANS Sunday Service Window

In the fall semester CANS was approved for a weekly service window, Sundays 6 a.m.-noon. CANS will utilize the window on an as-needed basis to perform routine maintenance, testing, upgrades and other check-ups.

The following downtime will occur this Sunday, Jan. 11:

LIMITED NUMBER OF TU INTERNET RESOURCES AVAILABLE TO OFF-CAMPUS USERS, 6-10 A.M.

CANS will continue testing for the implementation of the campus firewall, 6-10 a.m., Sunday. A firewall is a mechanism that protects internal computers from outside intrusion such as viruses, worms and other unauthorized users.

All TU Internet resources will be unavailable to off-campus users during the testing except for the following services, which WILL NOT be disrupted:
– the TU Web page
– all PeopleSoft Web pages
– e-mail
– Instant Messaging (MSN)
– VPN

On-campus Internet use will not be disrupted in any way.

Testing will take place each Sunday until the end of January 2004. A Daily Digest announcement will remind users of the testing each week.

The firewall is part of an ongoing information technology initiative to increase and improve security for the campus network. Please refer to {http://wwwnew.towson.edu/cans/faculty/policy/security/firewall.asp} for more information on the firewall.

If you have any additional questions, please contact the Firewall Installation Team at {firewall@towson.edu}.
