Tsunami Update from United States Postal Service

This is a United States Postal Service update from international postal administrations that were affected by the tsunami disaster.

The Postal Department of Sri Lanka advises that the situation is well under control as regards the damage caused by the tsunami to the coastal areas of the northern, eastern and southern provinces and parts of the western provinces. Colombo International Airport and the Central Mail Exchange of Sri Lanka were not affected. Deliveries to the rest of the island are operating normally, and letter and parcel deliveries to the disaster zones will be resumed as soon as the situation returns to normal. Foreign mail dispatches and receipts are continuing uninterrupted.

The Postal Administration of Thailand advises that the west coast of the southern part of Thailand was hit by the recent tsunami disaster, and this has led to damage to infrastructure in several provinces, including Phuket, Pang-gna, Satun, Trang, Ranong and Krabi. The transportation and delivery of mail to these areas has been affected. Thailand cannot accept liability in respect to delays in the delivery of items to the affected areas.

The Postal Administration of the Maldives advises that they have been hard hit by this catastrophe, suffering heavy loss of life and extensive structural damage that has left many parts of the country without electricity or the means to communicate. This includes postal service, which has been disrupted on many islands since the disaster first struck. As this disruption of postal service affecting the islands (but not Male, the capital) is likely to continue in the coming days, some delays in mail delivery to the affected areas can be expected. The government promises to nevertheless do their best to maintain normal service for the delivery of items intended for the region.
