Downtime Information for This Week’s CANS Service Window

Earlier this semester, CANS was approved for a weekly service window, Sundays 6 a.m.-noon. CANS will utilize the window on an as-needed basis to perform routine maintenance, testing, upgrades and other check-ups.

The following downtime will occur this Sunday, Dec. 7:

NETWORK UNAVAILABLE FOR FIREWALL TESTING, 9 A.M.-NOON

CANS will continue testing for the implementation of the campus firewall Sunday, Dec. 7 from 9 a.m. to noon. A firewall is a mechanism that protects internal computers from outside intrusion such as viruses, worms and other unauthorized users.

Internet resources, including e-mail, will be unavailable to on-campus users. Any Internet content that is provided by TU servers will be unavailable to off-campus users, as well.

Testing will take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. each Sunday until the end of January 2004. A Daily Digest announcement will remind users of the testing each week.

The firewall is part of an ongoing information technology initiative to increase and improve security for the campus network. Please refer to {http://wwwnew.towson.edu/cans/faculty/policy/security/firewall.asp} for more information on the firewall.

If you have any additional questions, please contact the Firewall Installation Team at {firewall@towson.edu}.
