Computing and Network Services will begin testing for the implementation of the campus firewall Sunday, Nov. 16 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. A firewall is a mechanism that protects internal computers from outside intrusion such as viruses, worms and other unauthorized users.
During testing, CANS will place the firewall between the Towson University servers and the Internet. As a result, Internet resources, including e-mail, will be unavailable to on-campus users. Any Internet content that is provided by TU servers will be unavailable to off-campus users, as well.
Testing will take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. each Sunday from November 16 until the end of January 2004. A Daily Digest announcement will be sent each week to remind users of the testing.
The firewall is part of an ongoing information technology initiative to increase and improve security for the campus network. Please refer to {http://wwwnew.towson.edu/cans/faculty/policy/security/firewall.asp} for more information on the firewall.
If you have any additional questions, please contact the Firewall Installation Team at {firewall@towson.edu}.
