*******************IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT ****************
Students: we need your help to make this program work!
You’ve seen the posters around – Towson is sponsoring an “America Counts” initiative through the Math Department at Towson University. This structured program offers mathematics tutoring to children in grades 1-9. We will be working in four middle schools and two high schools and a facility of the Dept. of Juvenile Justice with hours of operation from 8 AM – 6 PM. You choose your own schedule and we help arrange car pools for you.
You don’t need to be a math whiz – just interested in kids!
1. The paid job. Pay is $10/hr, and you may work up to 20/hrs per week. You get one paid hour for transportation each time you go to the tutoring lab, and for every 3 hours of tutoring, you are paid for one hour of “prep time” (teacher planning). There is a mandatory training on Feb 14, 9 AM – 1 PM (you get paid at $10/hr, and we feed you lunch for free.) Funds are from Federal Work Study (must go thru financial aid as part of the hiring) but any student who already has financial aid may qualify. Also, many students are eligible for financial aid and don’t know it.
2. The volunteer opportunity. Could you spare just 2-3 hours one day a week to help? Any of the schools (and the kids!) would be very grateful for this service. We’d like everyone to come to the training Feb 14th – where we will tell you everything you need to know (even though you won’t get paid we’ll be glad to feed you lunch!!) Many professors offer extra credit points for volunteering – ask them. (You?ll get a letter from the school supervisor verifying your participation at the end of the semester.) Volunteering looks great on your resume, your portfolio, and will fill service requirements for some courses at Towson.
Requirements. Can you solve fraction, decimal and percentage problems? How are you with your multiplication tables? You do not need to be a math genius to participate! But you must have passed a college level math class or if you have not yet taken a college math class, you may take a basic math functional test provided by the Career Center.
If interested, by Feb 11th do the following:
