America Counts, an initiative of the Mathematics Department, is inviting VOLUNTEERS or FEDERAL WORK STUDY RECIPIENTS to tutor Baltimore City and Baltimore County middle school students 1:1 in basic math at their schools. We have opportunities at 6 middle schools and a facility of the Department of Juvenile Services. Students who have done this in the past describe it as a ?win-win.? The middle school kids love you, learn math, look up to you?and you have a feeling of accomplishment and awareness.
You don?t need to be a math whiz; successful completion of a University level math course or an adequate math SAT score (500) is all that is needed?along with lots of enthusiasm and a commitment to tutor several hours once a week for the rest of the semester. You pick your hours to tutor and can tutor up to 3 hours a day, or as little as one. You may tutor one day a week or all five!! You need to be dependable and responsible.
Orientation and training will be held in room 106 at 7800 York Road on Saturday SEPTEMBER 8, 2012 from 9:00 until 2:00 in 7800 York Road. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, school sign ups will take place, and car pools arranged. If you have a car you can pick your hours anytime between 8:00 a.m. till 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday or Saturday mornings. If you don?t have a car, carpools will be arranged at orientation. p.s. Students having Federal Work Study as part of a Financial Aid package will get paid. If you have financial aid at all you may be able to convert part of it to Federal Work Study .
