Over the past few days, Student Computing Services (SCS) has identified several instances of virus activity on campus.
Most cases are a result of students coming to campus with a computer that is already infected or computers that do not have adequate virus protection.
If infected, you will most likely receive notification that your computer has been compromised, or you may experience spontaneous reboots of your system. If the virus is not removed, you could lose your files and the ability to use your computer, as well as spread the virus to users in your e-mail address book.
Users who suspect infection should please contact the SCS Service Desk (410-704-5151, scs@towson.edu, Cook Library, room 35) for resources on how to remove the virus.
As preventative measure against future virus activity, SCS strongly recommends that all campus users download McAfee AntiVirus software, available to the TU community for free.
SCS also recommends that users configure the AutoUpdate function in McAfee so that virus definition files are automatically updated.
To download McAfee, go to {http://wwwnew.towson.edu/adminfinance/ots/CoreTechSecurity/OTSDownloads.asp}.
The Web site, which requires you to log in with your Towson username and password, also includes instructions for configuring AutoUpdate.
