If you’ve walked by Cook Beach in the month of October, you’ve probably noticed the purple flags spread out across the lawn. October marks Domestic Violence Awareness Month. The Sexual Assault Peer Educators (SAPEs) have taken national statistics about domestic violence and applied them to Towson University. Each one of the 6,677 purple flags represents a Towson student who has been, or may be in an unhealthy or abusive relationship in their lifetime. These purple flags will be up all month to raise awareness about domestic violence. SAPEs will be tabling at Cook Beach throughout the month to discuss the importance of healthy relationships, warning signs of an unhealthy relationship, bystander intervention, and the impact that relationship violence can have on an individual and community. Be sure to stop by and show your support for survivors of relationship violence. If you or someone you know needs support related to relationship violence you can schedule an appointment with the Counseling Center or reach out to Turn Around Inc. or call their 24-hr helpline at 443-279-0379.
