Cybersecurity used to be an issue only for technical IT security teams. But now, most of us manage our lives digitally, have social media accounts, make online purchases, or work online –and cyberattackers rely on regular people making mistakes. Here are the top reasons why YOU should care about cybersecurity every day, at work, school and home:
- Reputations are at stake: Breaches and hacks can lead to unwanted media attention-or embarrassment-for a person or their workplace. Even worse, irreversible online damage can be done to your personal, professional, or organization’s reputation on social media.
- Personal info is up for grabs: You should protect your personal data like you protect your wallet. Don’t leave it lying around. This includes social security and credit card numbers, passwords, financial statements, and medical records. These types of confidential info can be exploited by hackers using blackmail to get what they want.
- Finances are waiting to be stolen: This is an obvious one. Financial loss can be devastating, and identity thieves can ruin credit or cause bankruptcy. The process of addressing this damage can be costly, time-consuming and emotionally exhausting.
