TOMORROW – Multiculturalism in Action Brown Bag Series

Wednesday, September 12, 12:00 to 1:15pm, College of Liberal Arts, room 3150

“Brown-Skinned Outlaws: The Rhetorical Move to Criminalize Immigrants”

Dr. Jennifer Potter, Associate Professor and Chair, Department of Communication Studies

This presentation will focus on an extension of previous research that examines the use of the term “illegal” as it is applied to immigrants. Specifically, this project analyzes how political rhetoric and public discourse has widened the net, to include immigrants seeking asylum as “illegal immigrants.” This project also details the way in which President Trump’s rhetoric, specifically, has attempted to equate undocumented immigrant status with illegality and criminality and discusses the theoretical and societal implications of that rhetorical move.

This event, sponsored by the Office of Inclusion and Institutional Equity, is open to all faculty, staff, and students. Light refreshments will be provided.
