Changes to the University Core

Effective with the AY 2018-2019 Undergraduate Catalog, several policy changes to the University Core Curriculum (Core) will occur. These include:

Courses from Core 10 are considered as a discipline in the social and behavioral sciences regardless of the subject code.

Courses from Core 14 are considered as a discipline in the arts & humanities regardless of the subject code.

A student may not count more than four courses for both the major and the university core.

The first two changes have been enacted to align our Core requirements with the recent changes to the State of Maryland general education requirements (COMAR 13B.06.01.03). The third change has been made to provide students with greater flexibility in meeting the requirements of the Core and those of their major. These policy changes will also apply to earlier catalog years for current students.

In addition to these changes being reflected in the AY 2018-2019 Undergraduate Catalog, relevant webpages and materials published by Academic Advising and the Core Curriculum Review Committee have been updated.

Departments are instructed to review any advising materials they maintain for their undergraduate majors and amend them to reflect these changes.
