Study gender and social determinants of health and justice in Ghana with Towson University in Minimester 2019. This course will contextualize gender and health issues by exploring the history of a pre-European African culture and society, the Transatlantic Slave Trade, and the efforts of one of the premiere developing African countries to reclaim its nationhood. As the ancestral homeland for many African descendants in America, West Africa provides an opportunity to explore the past, present, and future of the African experience.
Through community engagement activities, participants will work with local entrepreneurs, craftspeople, farmers, and laborers, as well as meet midwives and health care practitioners. Students will learn about the Ghanaian educational system, interact with youth, and participate in an interactive approach to learning about the progress towards Ghana’s Millennium Development Goals. Program participants will spend time in Accra, Ho, Koforidua,Kumasi, and the Cape Coast. program highlights include visits to the Agumasta Wildlife Sanctuary and Wli Waterfalls, Cocoa Research Institute of Ghana, Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, and the W.E.B. Du Bois Memorial Center.
