Moving Men and Masculinity, Vincent E. Thomas, Department of Dance
My scholarship is unearthing our humanness as men through the lens of movement/dance. My research is also excavating and challenging social assumptions as well as rethinking our notions of the cultural construct – masculinity. Movement Enhancement Skills for Men (Core 5) is a course developed with this investigation at its center and heart. The course also utilizes Anne Green Gilbert’s “Brain Dance” to provide the physical and educational tools to view the landscape of men dancing. Fathers, Sons, and Other Guys is a fun interactive workshop that directly investigates the word “masculinity” through movement and other artistic lenses.
Part I – Observation of Movement Enhancement Skills for Men
April 26, 2018 2pm-3:15pm CA1004
This is an opportunity to observe the application of my research of the Brain Dance and its impact on the community of men in the dance studio. The Brain Dance was developed by Anne Green Gilbert, a dance educator in Seattle, Washington. During my sabbatical, I spent two weeks with Anne as an independent study to deepen my processes with the men’s class and the Brain Dance Five-Part Lesson.
Part II – Experiential Session of the Brain Dance
April 27, 2018 3pm-3:40pm CA2032
This session will give a brief overview of my sabbatical and includes a fun and interactive exploration of the Brain Dance.
