Smart energy savings tips for spring break

Spring break is the perfect time to save energy and the environment by reducing our carbon footprint!

Energy usage represents over 50 percent of the campus’ carbon emissions. We will be doing our part to conserve by setting back temperatures in buildings to reduce energy use. Here are things you can do in your office, lab, room or home help save energy over spring break:

  • POWER OFF all monitors and printers, and log out of all computers. If you plan to use Remote Desktop over the break, you will need to leave your PC on and change the setting for “Put the computer to sleep” to NEVER, under Power Options in Control Panel.
  • UNPLUG cell phones chargers, coffee makers, printers, TVs, stereos and other electrical devices from the wall. Plugged in devices use power even when they are not turned on.
  • Turn off the lights.
  • Lock doors and windows.
  • Vent hoods should be turned off or fully closed except when they are in use for experiments or material storage purposes.
