Join the Office of Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility for our next New York Times Talk of the semester, in partnership with the Student Government Association and Community Law in Action (CLIA)! CLIA is a nonprofit organization in Baltimore that promotes juvenile justice reform, namely by working to reducing the number of youth who are automatically charged as adults in Maryland. In our state, there are 33 offenses for which a police officer’s charge – not a judge’s conviction – automatically removes a 14- to 17-year-old from the juvenile system. Current law casts a very wide net so that many youth who didn’t directly commit one of these 33 offenses are swept up into the adult system. There they wait 5 months for a judge to hear their case for the first time and face a debilitating criminal record once they return to their communities. Senate Bill 863/House Bill 1550 would ensure that more of our community’s young people, those who didn’t directly commit the offense they’ve been charged with, have a chance at rehabilitation in the juvenile system. CLIA and the Towson SGA have partnered together to advocate for giving more kids that chance prior to these bills’ hearings in March.
