This February, don’t get duped by online dating or scammed by the Olympics

The Office of Information Security informs the campus of the latest cyberscams. While these February scams are not directly targeting work or learning processes at TU, here are some to be aware of:

  • Online Dating Deception. The FTC warns of cybercriminals using online dating sites to target victims, gaining trust then stealing their money. Social media users should aware all year, but especially around Valentine’s Day. See the warning and access resources on the Department of Homeland Security’s US-CERT webpage.
  • Olympic Cyberscams. This February, the world will be watching the Olympic games. Online scammers will also focus on the Games, using global interest in the Olympics to try to trick you into visiting malicious websites, opening malicious spam, downloading malware, and falling for scams. Read the Center for Internet Security’s article about how to spot and avoid Olympic scams.
