So you received the perfect gift over the holidays. If it connects to the Internet, it is considered to be part of The Internet of Things (IoT). These items are designed to assist in making our lives easier, but it require us to share more of our information so we need to take necessary steps in ensuring that our IoT devices are secure. The Office of Technology Services (OTS) offers these tips:
Improve the security of Internet-Enabled Devices
- Install all recent security patches and updates, as made available by your provider.
- Configure the privacy setting if your IoT device allows it.
- Set a security lock on the device such as a passcode or thumbprint.
- Use strong passwords. See the University’s Password Guidelines for requirements and suggestions.
Tips for your work or personal smart devices
- Be aware of phishing scams.
- Avoid connecting to public Wi-Fi networks to do personal banking or shopping.
- Connect your devices to trusted networks. When on campus, use the tu-secure wireless network.
- Monitor your online accounts closely.
- If you misplace a University-owned device, submit a TechHelp service request as soon as possible.
