Join us on Thursday November 16th from 6-7:30pm in Center for the Arts, Mainstage Theatre as Malcolm Purkey leads us through the history of Apartheid and the role Art played in it. As the artistic director of Market Theatre, or the “Theatre of Struggle”, Purkey has a unique perspective. Join us in his public lecture, The Role of Art in Uprisings.
Malcolm Purkey is an actor, director, playwright, screen writer, lecturer, artistic director and currently the Dean of AFDA, The South African School of Motion Picture Medium and Live Performance. Before becoming Dean, he was the Artistic Director of Market Theatre (during apartheid know as: “the theatre of struggle”). Born in Orange Grove, Johannesburg, his father was a jazz pianist and his mother a singer.
Purkey grew up a white male during Apartheid. He worked in spaces where it was illegal to build work across color—black, white and colored. In 20 years, South Africa has moved from a legal Apartheid State to an economically driven Apartheid State. 50 years later, here in the U.S., we mirror this same landscape and history, we just use different words, like segregation, or urban blight to describe it.
