Malware was recently found in CCleaner, a popular app that cleans out advertising cookies and junk programs to speed up devices. Hackers slipped a malicious program into the legitimate CCleaner software that could allow them to remotely access the device without the user’s knowledge. This hack was detected by Cisco Talos, a cybersecurity company that also helps protect Towson University, and is now disarmed.
If you use CCleaner for Windows v5.33 on a personal computer
To address any potential issues on personal devices, Cisco Talos recommends restoring from backups or reimaging systems to ensure the infected version of CCleaner is removed, along with any other malware that might be on the system.
If you use CCleaner on a TU-owned device or computer
Stop using the program immediately, do not download any updates and contact the Office of Technology Services through a TechHelp service request.
Before downloading external software that promises to improve speed or security onto TU-owned computers, please first contact the Office of Technology Services, as OTS updates and manages security-related applications on these machines. If you have any questions about cybersecurity at TU, please submit a TechHelp service request.
