Security Patches: why you need them

Google and Apple have released security patches for multiple vulnerabilities, including the recent bug, “BroadPwn.” This virus was found in millions of Android and iOS devices, and it could allow attackers to remotely execute code on targeted devices without user interaction. How do you protect yourself? Install the latest available security patches as soon as they are made available by your provider.

What are patches and why use them?

Security updates are released by software companies fix, or “patch,” a bug or security vulnerability within a program. Vulnerabilities are mistakes that allow the software to be exploited by hackers or malware.

Patches are the best defense against common or current viruses and malware. Security updates are often released to address specific security threats, and by downloading and installing updates, the vulnerabilities used by viruses are patched, providing more protection from hackers.

The Office of Technology Services (OTS) reminds you to always install the latest security patches to personal devices as soon as your provider makes them available.
