On Tuesday, the south stairwell of the University Union garage collapsed during planned demolition work for the staircase’s replacement. The work was being handled by an outside contractor with extensive experience in this type of work. The stairwell has been closed to the public since work began in mid-June.
Following the incident, two structural engineers separately surveyed and confirmed the garage’s structural integrity. Based on their approval, the garage itself remains open for regular operations. The south stairwell will continue to be closed until it is replaced and structurally approved for use.
A construction worker sustained non-life threatening injuries during the collapse. He is recovering in a nearby hospital, and our thoughts remain with him and his family.
The university remains committed to the safety of its students, faculty, staff and vendors. For questions about this incident, please contact Facilities Management at 410-704-2481.
