OTS Training Tip of the Week

Protect Cells From Being Edited in Excel

There may be times when you are sharing an Excel spreadsheet with others. To keep collaborators from accidentally editing ranges of cells, follow these steps:

  1. Select the range of cells you would like to protect.
  2. In the Home tab of the ribbon, click the Format icon and select Lock Cell from the drop-down menu.
  3. Click the Format icon again and select Protect Sheet from the drop-down menu.
  4. In the Protect Sheet window, enter an optional password, select the permissions for users and click OKProtect Sheet window
  5. Only the cells you have not locked will be available for users to edit.
  6. To unlock all cells, click the Format icon again and select Unprotect Sheet from the drop-down menu.

Note: You are not able to lock cells or protect sheets in Excel online. This process must be completed in the local copy of Microsoft Excel.
