What You Need to Know About the Seasonal Flu

Influenza (flu) has come early this year.  The flu is highly contagious, but also preventable.  It is spread via droplets from one person to another through coughing, sneezing, talking or by touching an object or shaking hands and then touching your mouth, nose or face.  You can be contagious before you ever feel ill and spread the flu for days after.

The best protection from the flu is getting an annual flu vaccine.  The spread of flu can be prevented by frequent hand washing or use of hand sanitizer, covering one’s mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and keeping away from others when feeling sick.

Symptoms of the flu include:

  • Fever or feeling feverish/chills
  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headaches
  • Fatigue (very tired)
  • Vomiting and diarrhea

Some are at risk for developing serious complications from the flu, especially those with chronic medical conditions.

If you experience flu-like symptoms do not attend class or work. Do your best to avoid close contact with others, stay hydrated and get plenty of rest.  If you have symptoms of flu and are very sick or worried about your illness, contact your health care provider or the Health Center @ 410-704-2466 to schedule an appointment.

The Health Center offers flu shots to students, faculty and staff by appointment Monday-Friday 8 am to 5 pm. There will be a flu shot clinic on October 19th from 9:30 am- 1:30 pm at the Potomac Lounge and the entire campus community is welcome.  The $20 fee is covered by most health insurance or can be billed through the OneCard.
