The Witch-Hunt Narrative: Politics, Psychology and the Sexual Abuse of Children

Monday, November 14, 12:00 noon, College of Liberal Arts, room 4310

Come hear Dr. Ross Cheit, Professor in the Department of Political Science and Public Policy at Brown University, present the Fall 2016 lecture associated with the Martha A. Mitten Memorial Professorship in the College of Liberal Arts. Dr. Cheit will describe some of the findings from his recent book, The Witch-Hunt Narrative: Politics, Psychology and the Sexual Abuse of Children (Oxford University Press, 2014), about highly-contested child sexual abuse cases from the 1980s and early 1990s. He found considerable evidence that contradicts the widespread claims about “hysteria” during this era. Those findings will be connected to developments in the Catholic Church and at Penn State. His presentation will conclude with general observations about the challenges of child protection in contemporary America.
