7400 York Road Functional Exercise

On Thursday, August 20, 2015, the Office of Public Safety’s Department of Environmental Health & Safety-Office of Emergency Preparedness and the Police Department will be conducting a shelter-in-place exercise in 7400 York Road. The exercise will occur sometime between 9 a.m. and noon and last for approximately 15 minutes. Accessing the building will not be permitted while the functional exercise is in progress.

We will exercise one of the steps that can be taken by students and staff to protect themselves and others and evaluate the responses to the incident.

This exercise is designed to simulate the sheltering-in-place of staff and students necessitated by a criminal event and to test and evaluate the capabilities of responding departments under these conditions. It will provide an opportunity to test and evaluate plans and procedures, build partnerships and identify areas of improvement.

There will be no simulated criminal event or activity during the exercise.

If you have any questions, please contact Cpl. Joe Gregory at x4-5951.

Please remember that in a real criminal event, everyone should evaluate the situation and decide whether it is safe to avoid the danger by running from the building or area. If it is not safe to RUN, you should deny the subject access to you by finding a safe location and lock the door and/or barricade the door to HIDE.  Turn off the lights and remain quiet.  Finally if confronted by an armed subject who is intent on hurting you or others, you should defend yourself and FIGHT to save your life.  Students, faculty and staff are encouraged to view the short eight minute emergency preparedness video which covers these concepts.  The video is on-line at http://www.towson.edu/adminfinance/facilities/police/campussafety/emergencyprep.asp
