Tutor Middle School Students Basic Math

America Counts, an initiative of the Mathematics Department, is inviting volunteers or Federal Work Study students to tutor Baltimore City and Baltimore County middle school students one-on-one in basic math. We have opportunities at six middle schools and one in a facility for the Department of Juvenile Services.

Students who have done this in the past describe it as a “win-win.” The kids love you, learn math, and look up to you, while you are left with feelings of accomplishment and a new awareness.

You don’t need to be a math whiz; successful completion of a University level math course or an adequate math SAT score (500) is all that is needed, along with lots of enthusiasm and commitment! You will be asked to tutor for several hours a week for the rest of the semester. You pick your hours to tutor and can tutor up to 3 hours a day, or as little as one, and up to 20 hours a week. The sites decide the hours they would like to have tutors; they include school hours, after school hours and even some evening hours, though no Saturdays. You may tutor one day a week or all five! You need to be dependable and responsible.

Orientation and training will be held at 7800 York Road, room 106 on Saturday February 8, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, school sign-ups will take place, and car pools will be arranged. If you have a car, you can pick your hours anytime between 8 a.m. – 8 p.m., Monday through Friday. If you don’t have a car, carpools will be arranged at orientation. To sign up please contact Doris Cowl, Program Director, at (410)704- 4998 or dcowl@towson.edu You will learn everything about the program at orientation.

Students who have Federal Work Study as part of their financial aid package get paid to tutor. Volunteers get a warm feeling in their stomach, references, lots of hugs from the kids and knowledge that they are doing the right thing!

If you want references from other students who have tutored in the past, we can provide those also!

We hope to see you (and your friends) Saturday, February 8 at 9 p.m. at 7800 York 106.

Please respond. You’ll be glad you did!
