Tutoring Opportunities: Middle School Math

America Counts, an initiative of the Mathematics Department, is inviting volunteers or Federal Work Study students to tutor Baltimore City and Baltimore County middle school students 1:1 inbasic math. We have opportunities at 6 middle schools and a facility of the Department of Juvenile Services.   Students who have done this in the past describe it as a “win-win.” The middle school kids love you, learn math, look up to you–and you have a feeling of accomplishment and awareness.

You don’t need to be a math whiz; successful completion of a University level math course or an adequate math SAT score (500) is all that is needed…along with lots of enthusiasm and a commitment to tutor several hours once a week for the rest of the semester. You pick your hours to tutor and can tutor up to three hours a day, or as little as one, and up to 20 hours a week. You may tutor one day a week or all five!!  You need to be dependable and responsible.

Orientation and training will be held in room 106 at 7800 York Road on Saturday September 21, 2013 from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, school sign ups will take place, and car pools arranged. If you have a car you can pick your hours anytime between 8 a.m. till 8 p.m., Monday through Friday. If you don’t have a car, carpools will be arranged at orientation.   To sign up please contact Doris Cowl, Program Director, at (410)704- 4998 or dcowl@towson.edu You will learn everything about the program at orientation.

If you want references from other students who have tutored in the past, we can provide that also!!!!

Hope to see you–and your friends–Saturday, September 21 at 9!!!
