Responding More Effectively to Student Writing

Responding to student essays can feel like an unrewarding task. We often spend large amounts of time on each paper yet wonder if our comments are actually helping students improve their writing. In this workshop, Wayne Robertson will present some of the current research about giving feedback to students. He will address how to produce comments that resonate with students and help them set goals for their own improvement. He will also discuss ways to remain effective while cutting down on the time spent on each essay. In the second half of the workshop, participants will work through student papers, practicing how to craft effective responses. They will also learn about alternative methods for feedback such as using audio and screencasting software.

Presenter Wayne Robertson is the Writing Center Director at Towson University. Previously he served as the Writing Program Administrator at Whatcom College in Washington State and the Writing Center Director at Oregon State University. In 2005, his documentary Writing Across Borders won a Telly Award and was nominated for the International Writing Center Association’s annual Outstanding Book/Major Work Award.

Blackboard Portfolios for Students

Blackboard has a portfolio feature that allows students to compile their best work throughout their academic careers. As they approach graduation, the portfolios can be downloaded onto a hard drive or shared with potential employers. This workshop will demonstrate how to set up, build, and share an e-portfolio.

Presenter Susanna Sayre has taught at Towson University since 1998. She helps students develop e-portfolios in her English 317: Writing for Business and Industry course.

Make Your Classes More Interactive with Online Tools

Presenter: Dr. Emily Halligan (Art History)

In this presentation a faculty member who regularly uses online teaching tools will address several different technologies available to more fully engage students and enrich all types of courses.

Participants will get brief introductions to these interactive online tools:

  • Screencast videos for tours of course sites,      explanations of key issues such as avoiding plagiarism, etc.
  • VoiceThread for class discussions
  • Prezi for introducing assignments
  • PowerPoint projects as alternatives to papers

Presenter Dr. Emily Halligan is an Adjunct Professor of Art History and FYE & Transfer Student Advisor in the Department of Art + Design, Art History, Art Education. She received her Ph.D. In Art History from the University of Delaware with a concentration in American & Modern Art and Architecture. After beginning in the museum field, lecturing and researching at the National Gallery of Art and the Maryland Historical Society, she began teaching at Towson in 2000 and now teaches here regularly, focusing on design and photo history. She has developed multiple online courses for the art department and is also currently working to redesign existing online courses.
