?The Origins and Development of Salsa? presented by Eileen Torres, is a culturally rich, educational and entertaining presentation that has met with rave reviews from audiences at The Kennedy Center, National Geographic Society, The Pentagon and many other venues in the United States, Puerto Rico and Holland. It is an oral presentation complete with video and music clips that tells the story of how Salsa began. It includes information on the people who influenced the music at its start.
The program begins with the African drumming traditions brought with the slaves to Cuba. The decade-by-decade journey travels to Cuba in the 1930’s. The excursion continues with stops in New York City in the 40’s, Mexico in the 50’s, and Puerto Rico in the 60’s. It reveals the effects of the “British Invasion” on the decline in popularity of Latin music in the 60’s and Carlos Santana’s introduction of Latin themes in rock music. It continues to the 70’s Golden Era of Salsa and in to the emergence of Salsa Romantica in the 80’s. It speaks of the current state of Salsa with the Colombian, Venezuelan and Peruvian influences. Salsa music clips from Japan, France, Finland, Sweden, Israel, Holland, Congo/Zaire and Senegal are played and concludes with a question and answer period.
