Student Health Insurance Fall Open Enrollment

Towson University is pleased to offer the 2004 – 2005 Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) for eligible* Domestic Students (i.e. U.S. Citizens and Permanent Residents). The plan is administered by The Chickering Group, an Aetna company. The deadline to enroll in this program is Friday, October 1, 2004.

All students are strongly encouraged to have adequate health insurance. If you have been covered by your parents’ or spouse’s policy, you should confirm that you are still eligible for coverage. Employer plans often do not cover students after they reach a certain age. Also, HMOs may provide limited coverage when away from home. The Towson SHIP is a great alternative and provides excellent benefits at reasonable cost. Voluntary Enrollment for Eligible* Domestic Students: (Please note: International students on J and F visas are automatically enrolled in this plan and should NOT enroll themselves or they will be double-billed).

If you are a US citizen or Permanent Resident and wish to enroll in the Plan, you may enroll on-line by visiting the Dowell Health Center website, {http://www.towson.edu/dowellhealthcenter}, and clicking on Student Health Insurance Plan link or bu going directly to the Chickering website:{http://www.chickering.com/stu_conn/student_connection.aspx?group_number=890420}. You may also view and download a Plan Brochure, e-mail questions and search for a plan provider.

The plan uses the Dowell Health Center (DHC) as your primary care provider while you are at Towson. Most services (including medications, lab tests, etc.) received at the DHC are covered at 100% after a small visit co-pay (e.g. $10 for a routine illness visit). For specialty referrals, after-hours emergencies, and hospital care, the Plan uses the Aetna Preferred Provider Network. Medical expenses for care received outside the DHC are covered at 80% for in-network providers after you pay the yearly deductible. (The yearly deductible is reduced from $500 to $150 with a referral from the DHC.) The basic Plan has a $100,000 Aggregate Maximum per illness/injury per policy year. The plan provides comprehensive coverage anywhere in the world, even when you are at home or traveling in the U.S. or abroad for study or vacation.

*Domestic Eligibility guidelines – All Towson University students continuously taking six or more credit hours with the University and all Graduate students in a degree- seeking program. Should you have any questions regarding the Benefits and Coverage, please do not hesitate to call Chickering’s Customer Service Department at 1-877-437-6535. Thank you and have a safe and healthy 2004 – 2005 academic year!
