LAST 484 or POSC 471 : Cuba Today: Revolution and Counter-Revolution
Weekly meetings of a gateway course on the TU campus during the Spring 04 Semester, followed by study abroad in Cuba for 12 days
All Majors Welcome (no language required)
In this two-part, 4-credit course, students will spend a semester studying Cuba since 1959 and then travel to the island for a 12-day seminar to observe the politics of Cuba first-hand. The course will provide students with an understanding of the Cuban Revolution – one of the most important and complex historical events in 20th Century Latin America. Students will learn about the successes and failures of the Revolution, and about the Counter-Revolution conducted from Washington, Miami, and elsewhere.
This is an once-in-a-lifetime experience for students majoring in International Studies, Political Science, Latin American Studies, and Spanish, to study Cuba.
While in Cuba, the group will visit historic sites in Havana, Santa Clara, Trinidad, Playa Giron (Bay of Pigs), Cardenas, and Varadero. Participants will be housed two or more to a room in retreat centers, guesthouses, or modest hotels. Accommodations will be dormitory-style with shared bathrooms. The travel portion of the course is coordinated by the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Center in Havana, the Center for Global Education in Minneapolis, and the TU Study Abroad Office.
