The Danger of the REAL ID Act

The REAL ID Act was passed by the federal government back in 2005 only after politicians in the House of Representatives attached it to another bill which was guarenteed to pass. It sets requirements for states to establish an identification card for each citizen in their respective states, with informational requirements set by the federal government.

The results will be longer lines at the DMV, as well as a greater likelihood of persons being targeted for identity theft. Persons who refuse to accept these cards will be subjected to harassment from the government.

Maryland is currently considering a bill, Senate Joint Resolution 5, urging Congress to repeal the act, joining many other states in doing so.

On Wednesday, April 4th, from 7:00 to 8:00 PM, Ms. Meredith Curtis, Director of Public Outreach for the American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland, will come speak about the REAL ID Act, what it means to us, and what we can do to fight it. This will take place in Room 316 of the University Union.
