Make a Difference, Get Paid – Now Hiring Tutors for Cherry Hill

Want to make a difference? Don?t have much time? Need some extra cash? Get paid 10 dollars an hour to help middle school students in Cherry Hill achieve academic success.

The Office of Civic Engagement and the Department of Mathematics are seeking undergraduate and graduate students to work as math tutors for middle school students in Baltimore City Public Schools in the Cherry Hill community of south Baltimore.

Hours per week: 5
Wage: $10.00/hr

When: Tutoring sessions begin January 17, 2012. 90 minute tutoring sessions will occur twice weekly, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 3:00-4:30 PM. Tutors should plan to meet at 2 PM to travel to Cherry Hill.

Duties: Provide mathematics instruction to small groups of 3-4 middle school students in an after-school program in Cherry Hill. Work with students to enhance comprehension of mathematics content and skills, foster an excitement and appreciation for mathematics, and increase students? understanding of the importance of mathematics in daily life. Tutors will be expected to plan mathematics activities prior to each tutoring session.

Benefits: Tutors will receive free transportation from Towson to Cherry Hill schools and back and will receive compensation for up to 2 hours of transportation time per week. Tutors will receive paid orientation and training, prior to beginning tutoring.

Qualifications: Required: Tutors must be currently enrolled undergraduate or graduate student in good academic standing, have a minimum 3.0 GPA, English speaking and writing fluency, competency in mathematics, ability to attend all tutoring and training sessions from January to March, ability to pass a state and federal background check, ability to community effectively with diverse individuals and youth, desire to help youth achieve academic success in mathematics, ability to maintain a positive, kind, caring, and enthusiastic attitude, dependable, ability to work both independently and with a team, ability to maintain a professional relationship with tutees and respect confidentiality. Preferred: Prior experience tutoring, prior experience working with at-risk youth.
