Have Fun While Helping Middle School Students Learn Math

America Counts, an initiative of the Mathematics Department, is inviting students to tutor basic math to middle school students in Baltimore City , Baltimore County, or a facility of the Department of Juvenile Services. Tutoring is done 1:1 at the school or site. You pick the times you would like to tutor (within certain guidelines) and drive or carpool to the site.

Eligibility is a C or better in a University level math class or 500 or more on the math SATs? and lots of enthusiasm to tutor at least several hours per week for the semester. Students who have done this in the past describe it as a ?win-win?.

Students who have Federal Work Study as part of a financial aid package get paid $10.00 for tutoring time and prorated travel time. Volunteers may receive extra credit, get to experience all the rewards, and maybe a ?surprise? at the end!

Orientation and training will be held Saturday, September 13,2008 in the York Road Building, Room 106 from 9:00 a.m. till 2:00 p.m. A light breakfast and lunch will be provided. The program will be explained in detail, school sign ups will take place, and carpools arranged at that time.

For further information and to reserve your space at the training please contact Doris Cowl, Director of America Counts, at (410) 704-4998 or at {dcowl@towson.edu}.
