Why should I be concerned about upgrading Microsoft Service Packs?
Windows XP SP2 offers security and stability enhancements to Windows XP, and includes several new features that control pop-ups, make future updates easier and some newer software applications require SP2 in order to function properly. Microsoft will stop supporting Windows XP without SP2 on October 10. This means that Microsoft will no longer issue security updates and patches for any computer without Service Pack 2. The University seeks to maintain our computers with the latest, most functional and most secure versions of Windows available.
This summer, OTS has been installing all new PCs in campus offices with Windows XP Service Pack 2.

What do I need to do to get this new Service Pack?
Sit back and relax. If you leave your computer on but logged off overnight, you most likely won?t even notice that SP2 has installed. It will also help if you restart your computer periodically; at least once a week is good.
When will SP2 be installed on my office computer?
The University will be gradually sending the Service Pack to PCs on campus via the network. PCs will be installed based on physical grouping and location on campus.

Will this cause problems with my computer?
In our extensive testing, the success rate for this install has been very high and we anticipate very few problems. In the unlikely event that something should go wrong, OTS Field Support personnel will be dedicated to covering the individual areas that will be upgraded.
