CANS? Technology Training Offers Variety of Topics this Semester

Was one of your New Year?s Resolutions to become more technology savvy? If so, CANS? Technology Training Center will offer expertise on a variety of computing topics for its upcoming spring semester 2004 workshop series. Join your colleagues to learn something new or to refresh your skills in a relaxed and ?at your own pace? atmosphere. Students are now welcome to attend classes, as well!

The following classes are offered in February:

WINDOWS
Windows Fundamentals ? Wednesday, Feb. 11, 1-4 p.m.
Are you new to computers? Increase your confidence and employ the many tools that Windows offers! You’ll get started by learning terminology, navigating with the mouse and working with programs. Manage windows by moving, resizing and minimizing them. Learn how to open, save and close files, as well as delete and rename them. (Prerequisite: none)

OUTLOOK
Outlook: E-mail and Calendar Basics ? Thursday, Feb. 12, 9 a.m.-noon
Towson University?s e-mail system offers many great features. Come to this class to learn the overall processes of sending and organizing e-mail and appointments. (Prerequisite: basic Windows skills)

Outlook: Advanced E-mail Skills ? Thursday, Feb. 12, 1-4 p.m.
Are you ready to take e-mail to the next level? This course is designed for users who are comfortable with sending, reading and managing e-mail and who are ready to customize Outlook to meet their needs. (Prerequisite: Outlook experience)

Power Hour: Outlook Address Book and More ? Wednesday, Feb. 25, 1-2 p.m.
This quick course teaches you how to enter and organize address book information, set up a task list, assign tasks to others and create quick notes for reference. (Prerequisite: Outlook experience)

Power Hour: Outlook Calendar Shortcuts and Tips ? Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2:30-3:30 p.m.
Get the most out of the Outlook calendar. Find out how to categorize appointments, create effective meetings, print what you need and learn many other quick tips. (Prerequisite: Outlook experience)

POWERPOINT
PowerPoint 2000: Fundamentals ? Monday, Feb. 16, 9 a.m.-noon
Give your presentations a lift with a PowerPoint slide show! Not only will you see just how fast you can get started with built-in templates, but you?ll also learn how to add decorative backgrounds, insert and rearrange slides, format your text, insert graphics and run a slide show with animated transitions and special effects. (Prerequisite: Windows Fundamentals)

PowerPoint 2000: Customizing Templates and Graphics ? Wednesday, Feb. 18, 9 a.m.-noon
How do you put the same information on every slide of your presentation without typing it over and over again? Create a Master Slide! Did you also know you can use your PowerPoint presentation to create handouts and speaker notes? It?s easy! By the end of this class you?ll be able to create your own template for future slide shows!(Prerequisite: Windows Fundamentals, PowerPoint 2000: Fundamentals)

EXCEL
Excel Fundamentals ? Thursday, Feb. 19, 9 a.m.-noon
Keeping track of information with a spreadsheet is easy if you start with a good foundation! This class is designed for the spreadsheet beginner. (Prerequisite: Windows Fundamentals)

Power Hour: Excel Charts ? Wednesday, Feb. 25, 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Make your numbers explode on the page with an Excel 2000 chart to back them up! This class starts off with the Chart Wizard and then quickly moves on to teaching you how to select chart elements, move and resize, apply custom colors and effects, and inserting practical elements. (Prerequisite: Excel Fundamentals)

Power Hour: Excel Conditional Formatting and Formulas ? Wednesday, Feb. 25, 2:30-3:30 p.m.
Learn how to apply conditional formatting to change how cells appear if the data meets your criteria. You will also learn to use conditional formulas to perform calculations. (Prerequisite: Excel experience)

Excel: Performing Calculations ? Thursday, Feb. 26, 9 a.m.-noon
Put away your calculator and learn to let your spreadsheet do the work for you! Learn how to apply calculations to your data and format your finished work for professional-looking results. (Prerequisite: Excel Fundamentals)

PROJECT MANAGEMENT
Microsoft Project 2000: Creating a Project ? Friday, Feb. 20, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.
This project management software is an invaluable tool to both the full-time project manager and the full-time employee with part-time project responsibilities. You will learn key project management concepts, enter tasks and task relationships, identify the critical path, collapse and expand project details, assign resources to tasks, adjust schedules and print built-in reports. (Prerequisite: Windows Fundamentals)

ONLINE SERVICES (PEOPLESOFT)
Follow-up Support ? Tuesday, Feb. 24, 2-3 p.m.
This workshop is for faculty and staff who use the Online Services system and would like additional assistance. Come to this session to receive individualized assistance in a computer lab. Please bring specific tasks to work on so that you can apply what you?re learning to your work. (Registration Required)

TARGETED LEARNING SESSIONS
Schedule a one-on-one session for help with specific topics or to explore a general topic. Appointments may be scheduled for the dates listed below in 45-minute increments, 9 a.m.-noon and 1-4 p.m. Please bring your own files to work on.
