OTS Updates Printer Recommendations

The Office of Technology Services’ (OTS) recently updated its recommendations for university-purchased printers. View the list at {http://wwwnew.towson.edu/adminfinance/ots/coretechsecurity/hwrecommended.asp}.

Please note that OTS is unable to support multi-function printers, which include additional features such as copying, faxing and scanning. OTS does not recommend the purchase of these machines.

In additon, please note that OTS does not recommend the purchase of deskjet printers and suggests laser printers as an alternative. In OTS’ experience, laser printers last longer, are more cost-effective, are faster and easier to maintain than deskjet printers.

Departments should only purchase individual printers if there is an absolute need. Otherwise, small groups of faculty and staff members should share a central printer. Please refer to the Web page’s sections on small workgroup needs and large workgroup needs for recommendations.

OTS establishes technology recommendations to ensure that campus users will receive the best machine at the best price, which properly runs campus software, properly integrates with the campus enterprise systems and streamlines the procurement process. Also inlcuded on the Web page are recommendations for desktops, laptops and PDAs.
