Benefits Bulletin: Mid-Year Changes to Maryland State Benefits

Every year changes affect the personal status of faculty and staff members who are enrolled in any of the Maryland state benefits plans. Marriages, births, adoptions, divorces, deaths, graduations and/or loss of full-time student status for dependent children and loss of coverage from another source are all examples of qualifying events that give employees the opportunity to make mid-year changes to their current benefit enrollments.

If any of these changes have or will affect you this year, remember that you must act within 60 days of the qualifying event for the expected change to be accepted by the Maryland State Department of Budget and Management (DBM). Otherwise, you will have to wait for the next Open Enrollment period (tentatively scheduled for spring 2007) and have the change(s) become effective July 1, 2007.

In order to make such changes, a new benefits enrollment worksheet must be completed and delivered to the Towson University Office of Human Resources before the 60-day deadline. It is also especially important to delete any ineligible dependents within that timeframe to avoid overpayment of premiums that would not be refundable by DBM.

Questions should be directed either to Dave Curtis, x4-6018 or {dcurtis@towson.edu}, or Gail Price, x4-6017 or {gprice@towson.edu}.
