Security Updates to Campus Computers

As the threat of computer virus attacks has worsened, Computing and Network Services must take a more active role in ensuring that campus computers are protected.

CANS will now implement a more regular deployment of security updates and patches to Windows-based campus computers. Prior to sending out updates to the campus, each update will be subjected to a comprehensive testing procedure, which will ensure that computers are not adversely affected by any updates.

Most updates will be sent late at night so that they can run without affecting work performed on the computer during the business day. Because updates are sent at night, CANS highly recommends that you log off or restart your computer at the end of the day. Please do not shut down your computer. (To restart or log off, go to the Start menu, click Shut Down, and choose to Restart or Log Off.)

If you have turned off your computer at night, you may see a message the following morning on your computer stating that an update is ready to be installed. (You may also see this message if a high-priority update has been sent in the middle of the day.) You can choose to run the update immediately, or delay it until another time.

Further information about the security update process, including user interface details and a schedule of planned updates, is available at http://wwwnew.towson.edu/cans/faculty/policy/security/updates.
