The President seeking a Faculty Athletic Representative

The basic role of the Faculty Athletic Representative (FAR) is to help assure academic integrity relevant to Towson?s intercollegiate athletics,facilitate institutional control and enhance the quality of the student athletic experience. The FAR provides administrative oversight of athletic programs, makes relevant recommendations and advises the President and the Athletic Director. The FAR is also the principal communication link between athletics and faculty.

The FAR is appointed by the President, and reports to the President or his designee, serves as an advisor to the Athletic Director, and makes periodic reports to the University Senate relevant to athletic programs and academic status of student athletes. The FAR serves at the pleasure of the President. The FAR must be a tenured faculty or an administrator with tenured faculty rank. The FAR serves at the pleasure of the President.

An outline of the responsibilities of the FAR follows. Any faculty meeting the basic requirements may seek to be considered for this important role. Any interested faculty should carefully review the ?Principal Responsibilities? to be certain he or she can meet the demands of this important responsibility.

FACULTY ATHLETICS REPRESENTATIVE

I. Basic Role of the FAR

Relevant to the overall intercollegiate athletics program, to ensure academic integrity, facilitate institutional control, and enhance the quality of the student-athlete experience. In this regard, the Faculty Athletics Representative provides oversight in the administration of the athletics program, makes recommendations and provides advice to the institution?s President and Director of Athletics, represents the institution in its relationship with the NCAA, and serves as the principal communications link between the athletics program and the institution?s faculty.

II. Appointment/Report Process

The Faculty Athletics Representative is appointed by, and reports to, the President, serves in an advisory role to the Director of Athletics, and makes regular reports to the Faculty Senate relevant to the status of the intercollegiate athletics program and the academic progress/status of the programs? student-athletes. The FAR serves at the will of the President.

III. Minimum Qualifications

The Faculty Athletics Representative shall be a tenured member of the faculty, or an administrator who holds tenured faculty rank, and shall not hold an administrative or coaching position within the Department of Athletics.

IV. Principal Responsibilities

A. Ensures, either directly or indirectly via administrative oversight, that student-athletes meet NCAA and conference initial and continuing academic eligibility requirements, and the continuing and initial eligibility requirements of the institution.
B. Develops, or coordinates, periodic statistical reports relevant to the initial academic preparation (SAT scores and core curriculum GPA), graduation rates, and ongoing academic performance of student-athletes for each sports team.
C. Assumes oversight and coordination responsibility for institutional compliance activities/responsibilities which involve campus entities outside the athletics department. These entities include, but are not necessarily limited to: Office of Financial Aid; Office of Admissions, Office of the Registrar; Office of the Provost; and Office of Student Affairs. In this role, serves as Chair of the Athletics Compliance Committee.
D. In concert with the Director of Athletics and the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Student Services, ensures a comprehensive and effective rules education and compliance program.
E. In concert with the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Student Services, and the Director for Compliance and Student Services, and the Director of Athletics, coordinates the athletics special admissions process/program with the University?s Provost.
F. Participates in the preparation of the rules violations reports, and assumes a direct role in matters that potentially involve major NCAA rules violations (as applicable).
G. Assumes significant communications roles with student-athletes on a systematic basis, including participation in new student-athlete orientation programs, interaction with the student-athlete advisory committee, exit interviews, and individual consultations relevant to academic needs and concerns.
H. Recommends institutional positions on NCAA legislation.
I. In concert with the Associate Director of Athletics for Compliance and Student Services, provides oversight/direction for the Assistant Director of Athletics for Compliance Services and the Coordinator of Academic Support Services, and ensures that appropriate academic services are available for student-athletes.
J. Serves in a coordination role with applicable faculty on matters relevant to academic status reports and class absences for student-athletes.
K. Serves as a member of the University Steering Committee that coordinates the institution?s athletics certification self-study.
L. Serves as a participating voting member of the Intercollegiate Athletics Committee.
M. Assumes membership involvement on committees which hear appeals relevant to graduation and/or cancellation of athletic grants-in-aid.
N. Coordinates administration of NCAA coaching certification process for head and assistant coaches.
O. Assumes additional responsibilities as designated by the President.
