“Vicarious traumatization and the implications for professionals supporting diverse student populations in higher education”

Vicarious trauma is an ongoing area of research related to burnout and compassion fatigue through secondary trauma exposure. Primarily studied in social workers, emergency medicine practitioners, and law enforcement, research indicates that vicarious traumatization impacts those who repeatedly engage with primary trauma survivors. This doctoral research examines the potential impact on personal welfare and implications for practice for higher education professionals who may experience vicarious trauma through their work with students from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, including those with histories of primary trauma.
