“English proficiency: The ‘primary concern’ of culturally & linguistically diverse nursing students?”
Dr. Jennifer Mott-Smith, Department of English
The majority of articles examining the education of culturally and linguistically diverse nursing students concludes that language proficiency is a major barrier to this group’s success. However, these articles conflate language proficiency with language prejudice and fail to take power relations and ideologies such as racism into account. This presentation briefly reviews these difficulties, presents a critical analysis of some original data for comparison, and introduces linguistic concepts necessary to have a more nuanced understanding of the language experiences of these students.
This event is open to all faculty, staff, and students.
Light refreshments provided.
