Staying Safe – ridesharing services

The Towson University Police Department would like to remind our students to stay safe when traveling. Many students use rideshare services such as Uber, Lyft and Sidecar to travel to and from campus. No matter where you go, always make sure that you are getting into the right car with the right driver.

Please follow these safety tips when using rideshare services to remain safe:

Check your ride – Before riding, make sure the driver, car, and license plate number match the information in the rideshare service. If you are with someone who may be intoxicated, help them double check these details before they get in the vehicle.

GPS tracked routes – If the application provides tracking, you can track your route and the location of your car during the ride so you will know exactly where you are heading.

Shareable trip details  Once in route, you can share your route and ETA (estimated time of arrival), with friends and family so they can see where you are and know when to expect you.

Cross street pickups and drop offs – For an extra layer of privacy, some applications such as Uber let you enter your cross streets as a pick-up or drop-off destination instead of your address.

Secure contact information – If you need to contact your driver, some applications provide privacy protection to anonymize both phone numbers to protect everyone’s privacy.

Additional ride services can be obtained through local sedan and taxi services by dialing directory assistance (4-1-1) on your mobile phone.
