Math Tutoring Opportunity

AC Flyer Spring 2017

Have a passion for helping kids? The Department of Mathematics and the Office of Civic Engagement & Leadership are launching an initiative just for you!

America Counts is an opportunity for both volunteers and federal work study students to work 1 on 1 with Baltimore City middle school students helping them improve their number sense and math skills through schoolwork help and playing math games.

You do not have to be a math whiz to be a part of this initiative. Successful completion of a Towson MATH course or math SAT score of 500 is all that is required. We do ask that you are dependable, responsible, and commit to at least one session each week for the entire semester.

Those who have tutored in the past describe it as a very rewarding experience for both them and the middle school students. Tutoring opportunities are available at 4 middle schools and a facility of the Department of Juvenile Services. No matter what location you choose, the hours are very flexible! You can work as little as 1 hour a day, and as many as 20 hours a week.

Students who have Federal Work Study as part of their financial aid package get paid to tutor! (Great pay!!!!) If you don’t know if you qualify, we have someone who can determine that. Students without FWS can volunteer to tutor.

Orientation and training for America Counts will be held in YR 459 on February 10th 12:00-2:00 pm OR February 16th 4:00-6:00 pm.

During orientation you will hear details of the program: the different site choices and transportation availability, as well as expectations for tutoring sessions and strategies for improving kids’ (and your!) number sense. Federal work study will also be discussed during this meeting.

For any questions or to sign up, email AmericaCounts@towson.edu, or call Felice Shore in the Math Department (410-704-4450) or Stephanie Easterday in Civic Engagement at 410-704-2082. (E-mail goes to both Dr. Shore and Ms. Easterday)

We hope to see you and your friends on February 10th 12:00-2:00 pm OR February 16th 4:00-6:00 pm in York Road Bldg 459.
