Complying with I-9 Requirements

New employees are not permitted to begin working without prior authorization from the Office of Human Resources.

Supervisors are responsible for confirming that every new hire completes Section 1 of the  I-9 form on or before the first day of work, to ensure compliance with federal law. Effective May 31, 2016, the OHR transitioned to an electronic I-9 process. New employees are sent a link to complete Section 1, but will need to continue providing documentation in person to the OHR in order to complete Section 2.

Supervisors should contact the OHR to discuss any I-9 not completed within the required timeframe. This may result in separation, which could have significant impact to pay, benefits, and immigration status. Furthermore, I-9s completed outside of the required timeframe are tracked and discussed with Management Advisory & Compliance Services as part of TU’s internal auditing procedures.
