Have Fun While Tutoring Middle School Students Basic Math!
America Counts, an initiative of the Mathematics Department and the Department of Civic Engagement, is inviting volunteers or Federal Work Study students to tutor Baltimore City middle school students 1:1 in basic math. We have opportunities at 4 middle schools and a facility of the Department of Juvenile Services. Students who have done this in the past describe it as a “win-win.” The middle school kids love you, learn math, look up to you…and you have a feeling of accomplishment and awareness.
You don’t need to be a math whiz; successful completion of a University level math course or an adequate math SAT score (500) is all that is needed – along with a lot of enthusiasm and a commitment to tutor several hours once a week for the rest of the semester. You pick your hours to tutor and can tutor up to 3 hours a day, or as little as one, and up to 20 hours a week. The sites decide the hours they would like to have tutors, and they include school hours, after school and even some evening hours. You may tutor one day a week or all five! You need to be dependable and responsible and commit to tutoring at least once a week for the entire semester.
Orientation and training will be held in room 106 at 7800 York Road on Saturday September 10, 2016 from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Breakfast and lunch will be provided, school sign ups will take place, transportation arranged. You can provide your own transportation, or use our vans at selected times and sites. You can pick your hours anytime between 8:00 a.m. till 8:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Students who have Federal Work Study as part of their financial aid package get paid to tutor! Volunteers get a warm feeling in their stomach, references, lots of hugs from the kids and knowledge that they are doing the right thing!
If you want references from other students who have tutored in the past, we can provide that as well.
