Math Tutoring Opportunity

Have a passion for helping kids? The Mathematics Department and the Office of Civic Engagement & Leadership are launching an initiative just for you!

America Counts is an opportunity for both volunteers and federal work study students to tutor Baltimore City middle school students 1:1 in basic math.

You do not have to be a math whiz to be a part of this initiative. Successful completion of a University level math course or an adequate math SAT score (500) is all that is required. We do ask that you are dependable, responsible, and commit to at least once a week for the entire semester.

Those who have tutored in the past, describe it as a very rewarding experience for both them and the middle school students. Tutoring opportunities are available at 4 middle schools and a facility of the Department of Juvenile Services. No matter what location you choose, the hours are very flexible! You can work as little as 1 hour a day, and as many as 20 hours a week.

Students who have Federal Work Study as part of their financial aid package get paid to tutor! (Great pay!!!!) Students without FWS, can volunteer to tutor.

Orientation and training for America Counts will be held on Saturday September 10, 2016 from 9:00am until 2:00pm. During orientation you will learn details about the program, effective tutoring strategies, and more! Breakfast and lunch will be provided, and school sign-ups will take place. You can provide your own transportation or use our vehicle services during structured tutoring times. Federal work study will also be discussed during this meeting.

To sign up please contact Doris Cowl, Program Director, at (410) 704- 4998 or dcowl@towson.edu.

We hope to see you and your friends Saturday, September 10th at 9:00am!
