Imagine having all your Towson email in one location and accessing them from anywhere, on any device. To make this a reality, the Office of Technology Services will be migrating the email in your Personal Folders (PST files) to your TU mailbox. Historically, PST files have been used on campus by Windows users to archive email and to keep mailbox sizes below the quota limits. But now with Office 365, everyone has a 50 GB quota for email and PST files are no longer necessary. Migrations will be done by last name (not by department), and only the PST files attached to your Outlook will be migrated.
Do I need to do anything to prepare for the migration?
- Review the PST Migration FAQ on the Office 365 Web page.
- Only the PST files attached to your Outlook and on your C: or H: drives will be migrated, so no action is required unless you want to add or remove PST files from Outlook.
- You will receive an email from the Office 365 project team one week prior to and the day before your migration date.
What can I expect during the migration?
- The migration will be performed remotely so no one from OTS will need to visit your office.
- Depending on the size of your PST files, it may take several days to complete the migration.
- Outlook must be running for the migration to happen. On the day of your scheduled migration, please lock your workstation (instead of logging off) when you need to leave your computer. This will speed up the process. If Outlook is closed, the migration process will simply continue the next time you open Outlook.
- You may not have access to your PST files during the migration, but they should be fully accessible once migration is complete.
How will I know when the migration is complete?
- A new folder called “Personal Archive” will appear in your inbox. Under the Personal Archive folder will be a new subfolder with the name of the PST file that is getting moved. This new subfolder will contain all the folders and email from your PST file in the same hierarchy they had before they were moved.
- After the contents of a PST are completely migrated, it will be disconnected from Outlook and deleted.
